Information for Rangers Interested in Attending Venture Wellington

Scouts New Zealand is pleased to invite Rangers to attend Venture Wellington. This invitation has been agreed with, and is endorsed by, Girl Guiding New Zealand.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to attend Venture Wellington, Rangers must:

  • be 14 -19 years of age on 1 January 2010;
  • be an invested member of a Ranger Unit; and
  • have the approval of their Ranger Leader to attend.

Organisational Arrangements

For the purposes of the Venture, Rangers will be integrated into Venturer Units and will be treated in the same manner as female Venturers.

All Venture participants (i.e. both Venturers and Rangers) will be organised into Units of around 8 people, each of which will have an adult leader. The composition of the Units will be based on expeditions e.g. Units 1, 2 & 3 will be made up of the Venturers and Rangers doing the caving expedition, Units 4 & 5 will be those doing the scuba diving expedition and so on. Accordingly, Rangers (and Venturers) will be allocated individually to Venture Units rather than operate as a group from their home Ranger Unit. For the purpose of attending the Venture it is therefore irrelevant whether several or only one Ranger attends from a particular home Ranger Unit.

It is likely that there will be both males and females in each Venture Unit but this will depend on participants’ expedition choices.

Venture participants will assemble into their Venture Venturer Units when they arrive at Brookfield on 1 January. They will camp in that Unit during their expedition and during Phase 2 when they return to Brookfield i.e. for the whole Venture.

Each participant is required to provide their own tent (a two or four person hike tent is recommended). Participants may share a tent with another member of their expedition if they wish to. Under no circumstances may males and females share a tent (either formally or informally).

Travel to and From Venture

Travel to and from Venture is the responsibility of participants. There is no requirement to travel as a contingent from a local area, although Rangers may do so if they wish too. However, that will be up to them to organise.

In some areas of the country Venturers are organising group transportation and it may be possible for Rangers to participate in those arrangements.

Venture Rules

DADS Rules will apply to all participants (including Rangers) throughout the Venture. Persons not complying with DADS rules may be asked to leave the Venture. More information about DADS rules.

Applications

Rangers should apply using the same process used by Venturers i.e. the online application form on this website. Any references to "Venturer", "Venturer Units" or "Venturer Leaders" should be read as referring to Rangers, Ranger Units or Ranger Leaders and data filled in accordingly. Once completed, you should print the form and then you, your parents (if you are under 18 years) and your Ranger Leader should sign the form and post it (along with your deposit) to the Scouts New Zealand National Office.

Please note that you do NOT need to send it via the Girl Guiding New Zealand National Office. You should send the signed form directly to the Scouts New Zealand National office. Once we receive it we will process your application in the same way as we do for Venturers and communicate further information to you at the email address you provide.
